First-ever awards honor local governments around the world for community momentum building, digital inclusion, technology innovation, e-government applications, workforce productivity improvement, and local municipal initiative
BOSTON, Mass. (September 28, 2005) To pay tribute to local governments implementing broadband-wireless solutions for cities, counties and regions, the Wireless Internet Institute will announce the first-ever Wireless Communities Best Practices Awards at the W2i Digital Cities Convention (West), San Mateo Marriott (San Francisco Airport), October 1012, 2005.
Local authorities in both rich and poor countries increasingly view broadband connectivity as essential both for the social, economic and educational development of their communities, and for enhancing public safety and improving government operations while lowering telecommunications costs. Six new Best Practices Awards will honor the path-breaking efforts of local authorities and agencies around the world who are realizing the promise of broadband wireless solutions for their communities.
On behalf of the Awards Jury, W2i is pleased to announce 2005 awards finalists: A.N.P.C.I. (Italy), Chaska (MN), Corpus Christi (TX), Jigawa State (Nigeria), Lenexa (KS), Medford (OR), Piraí and Rio de Janeiro State (Brazil), Portsmouth (UK), Scottsburg (IN), Tempe (AZ), Washington (DC), Westminster (UK).
Winners of the Wireless Communities Best Practices Awards will be honored at a dinner and ceremony at the W2i Digital Cities Convention (West) on the evening of October 11, 2005. Local- government officials, industry thought leaders, technology providers and systems integrators will participate in the interactive three-day program to explore the full range of opportunities and roadblocks surrounding the planning and deployment of these networks, with an emphasis on applications and services.

About the Wireless Internet Institute (W2i) and the W2i Digital Cities Convention
is an independent think tank bringing together stakeholders around the world to accelerate the adoption of wireless Internet in support of universal connectivity for economic, social and educational development.
