At the fourth W2i Digital Cities Convention, organized in cooperation with UNITAR and the http://e-trading.in.th/exness-metatrader-4 Basque local government in Bilbao, Spain (7-9 November 2005), the Wireless Internet Institute will work with international development organizations, local government associations, field practitioners and the private sector to draft an action plan for local government planning and deployment of broadband-wireless infrastructures for economic and social development. The plan will be incorporated into the Bilbao Declaration, which is the contribution of the World Summit of Cities and Local Authorities to the second phase of the World Summit on the Information Society in Tunis (16-18 November 2005).

New Orleans to Run Wi-Fi Network
The Big Easy plans to be the first major city to offer free wireless Internet access to its citizens in an effort to entice businesses and people to return to the city after the devastating hurricane season. On Tuesday, New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin announced the city's plan to cover the city with Wi-Fi Internet access within a year. And unlike other citywide wireless networks that have been proposed in cities like Philadelphia and San Francisco, New Orleans plans to operate the network itself.
Small Windmill Powers Wireless
An electrical engineer from Texas has developed a method for powering wireless network nodes using small windmills. Shashank Priya of the University of Texas, Arlington has developed a windmill with a diameter of just 10cm which works by flexing piezoelectric crystals as it rotates, causing them to generate a current. A 'gentle breeze' of 16km/h is enough to generate the 7.5mW necessary to power a small electronic sensor.
MIT Maps Wireless Users Across Campus
MIT's newly upgraded wireless networkextended this month to cover the entire schooldoesn't merely get you online in study halls, stairwells or any other spot on the 9.4 million square foot campus. It also provides information on exactly how many people are logged on at any given location at any given time. It even reveals a user's identity if the individual has opted to make that data public.
Oakland County’s Public-Private Partnership
Although the county government is initiating the service, it won't own or operate it. The county has identified some 2,400 public sites a private operator can use to send signals and create the Wi-Fi access. In exchange, the private operatorMichTel of Pontiacwill offer free low-speed Internet service. It still will be faster than dial-up and obviously much more convenient. High-speed Wi-Fi service will be available for less than $20 a month.
EarthLink Takes Another One
EarthLink Inc. is storming ahead with its Wi-Fi broadband network rollouts, announcing a contract to blanket the 50-square-mile city of Anaheim, Calif., with the state's largest municipal Wi-Fi network. EarthLink said the network would provide inexpensive, high-speed Internet access to Anaheim's 345,000 residents and 2,077 city employees.

Slovenian Telecom Privatization Begins
The Slovenian government is likely to begin the privatisation of fixed line incumbent Telecom Slovenia by the end of 2005, when it is expected to present a strategy outlining the process. According to the head of the country’s Economics Ministry, Matjaz Jansa, no model of privatisation has yet been decided on. Earlier this year the Ministry said it would sell a 25% stake to a combination of a strategic partner, a portfolio investor and domestic investors, but it has not confirmed whether these plans are definite. Jansa said the privatisation is expected to be completed in 2006 at the earliest.
EU Commission Targets Members
Cyprus, along with Belgium, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland and Slovenia are the countries targeted by the European Commission in a new round of infringement proceedings concerning the EU telecom rules. The European Commission sent letters of formal notice to seven EU Member States for so far failing to notify it of electronic communications market reviews required by the EU regulatory framework for electronic communications.
WiMAX Superior but Faces Challenges
A new IDC study analyzes the environment of the 802.16e standard, detailing vendor activities and interests, investment themes in private companies, M&As, competing and complementary technologies, and the business case for mobile WiMax deployment in Europe. The future of mobile WiMax might not be as bright as its vendors would like you to believe. This wireless broadband technology, working under the IEEE standard 802.16e, offers WiFi bandwidth with a cellular range, but will face multiple challenges on its way to the market.
Altitude Telecom Acquired; WiMAX on Tap
France's main alternative broadband ISP, Free Telecom, will acquire privately held Altitude Telecom, the owner of the sole national 3.5GHz license, for an undisclosed amount. Free has not revealed exactly how it will use the WiMAX license, but it has mentioned that WiMAX will be particularly interesting in 2008-2010. At that time, we could expect to see mobile WiMAX (based on IEEE 802.16e) equipment available on the market that could allow Free to provide fixed-mobile convergence services to its residential customers. Free may then integrate WiMAX into the FreeBox and/or supply WiMAX PC cards to its customers in order to offer broadband access in any WiMAX location operated by Free in France, thereby bypassing France Telecom's local loop.
U.K. Social Services Turns to Wi-Fi
Social workers are using wireless technology to speed up communications on the front line. Barnet Council's Children and Families Service has rolled out PDAs to 240 social workers, O2 said on Wednesday. This will allow staff to spend more time face-to-face with children and families, according to O2. The value of the contract was undisclosed.

India’s Telecom Giant
He may be India's most ambitious telecom entrepreneur. The privileged son of a parliamentarian, Sunil Mittal didn't want to follow in his father's footsteps. So after graduating from Punjab University, he ended up forming his own tiny bicycle business in the 1970s. That company, Bharti Enterprises, has grown up to be one of India's leading private telecom service providers. With sales of $300 million and operating income of $53 million in 2000, Bharti is the largest private fixed-line operator in India.
Mobile Subscribers Reach 18 M in Pakistan
The number of cellphone subscribers crossed 18 million mark last month leaving behind the authorities’ forecast, which predicted 16 million mobile phone users by December 2005.
The figures compiled by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority suggest that by October 2005 cellular density in the country stood at 11.95 compared with 10.98 registered in September 2005.
Telecom Restored in Quake-Hit Pakistan
Efforts to completely repair and rehabilitate telecommunication network in Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Northern Areas are in full swing. The devastating earthquake on October 8 that ravaged a large swathe of population also damaged 48 of the 132 telephone exchanges operating in the AJK region. As a consequence, 20,173 of the 104,433 lines installed in the area with 10 microwave stations were damaged. The government launched the repair work immediately after the quake and all the exchanges in the AJK have been repaired, resulting in the restoration of telephone lines. Of the 10 microwave stations, nine have been made operational.
Just What Is Wi-Bro, Anyway?
South Korean government officials, network equipment companies, and cellular network suppliers have devised Wi-Bro (short for “wireless broadband” and a subset of the WiMAX standard) to accelerate the deployment of a WiMAX-type network. "The Koreans want to move ahead with WiMax deployments and since the standard is not yet fully ratified, they developed their own version of it," noted Lance Wilson, an industry analyst at .
Asia Mobile Entertainment at $47B by 2010
According to the UMTS Forum, the mobile entertainment industry is expected to generate revenues of up to US$47 billion by 2010 in the Asia-Pacific. This positions mobile entertainment as a key driver for wireless data usage and revenue. In response to this growth, the 3G World Congress and Exhibition will hold a special forum session on "Profiting from mobile Content, gaming and Entertainment Business Over 3G," during the show this November.
