Taipei Wireless City Declaration (June 30, 2006)
At the W2i Digital Cities Convention in Taipei, 28-30, 2006, mayors and local authorities representatives from 6 countries and 15 local governments signed the Taipei Wireless City Declaration, defining the attributes of a successful wireless city and committing to a course action to increase cooperation among cities and communities around the world. The Declaration was approved at a signing ceremony on the afternoon of June 30, 2006.
We, the mayors and representatives of local and regional authorities participating in the Digital Cities Convention Taipei from June 28 to 30, 2006, recognize the following as attributes of a successful wireless city:
• A pervasive digital infrastructure that makes technologies and services accessible to all citizens;
• Forward-looking policies to encourage economical growth and adaptation in the face of a constant flow of new technologies;
• E-government management and services in place, allowing the city to provide faster, more efficient, and higher-quality services to its citizens; and
• A close working relationship with other digital cities, allowing sharing of ideas and experience.
We express our sincere gratitude to the host city, Taipei, for bringing the 2006 Digital Cities Convention Taipei to a successful conclusion.
We declare that we are committed to the following courses of action:
• To solicit and encourage commitment from representatives of city governments and local and regional authorities to do everything within their power to develop pervasive wireless infrastructure;
• To encourage the exchange of experience and best practice in developing innovative applications and services over this wireless infrastructure;
• To develop our cities and regions by improving wireless city services to all citizens and businesses;
• To foster open discussion of government policies to support harmonization of wireless standards;
• To prompt all local and regional organizations seeking a more equitable information society to implement the commitments of this Declaration; and
• To facilitate, at the global level, collaboration between international organizations, city governments, local and regional authorities, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector.
In order to review progress towards these action items, we commit to assemble ideas and feedback by August 1, 2006 and organize collaborative activities in 2007 in the Gold Coast of Australia or other network locations.
